Alexis Keunen geboren op 5 april 1921 in Luik, overleden 1989 in Rouen is een Belgische surrealistische schilder.

Alexis Keunen studeerde aan de Académie Saint-Luc in Luik.

Hij verhuisde in 1959 naar Rouen.

Although born in France, Keunen spent much of his early life in Belgium and is now recognized as a Belgian rather than a French artist.
He had moved to Belgium as a young man to attend the Ecole de Saint-Luc in Liege where it seems he excelled as a student.
He was exposed to the paintings of Rene Magritte during his studies and the ideals of Surrealism would purvey his oeuvre for much of his career.
He was invited to show at the exhibitions of the Surrealist group Fantasmagies organized by Aubin Pasque where his work was well received.
Another opportunity came to Keunen when he was invited to join the group of painters known as La Jeune Peinture Belge (The Young Belgian Painters) wining their first prize in the exhibition of 1952.

1958 saw Keunen moved to Sotteville in France where he began to change his style and develop a feeling of Expressionism within his oeuvre.
These works were shown in several one-man exhibitions which were popular with the public and critics alike.
He would die in Sotteville in 1992.
This early work by Keunen dates from the period immediately after his attendance at the Ecole de Saint-Luc and is one of the artist’s earliest known works.
Other examples of the paintings of Alexis Keunen can be seen at the Musee de l’Art Wallon in Liege and the Musee de Verviers.

Alexis Keunen se place au centre de l’attention qu’il voue à son destin. Il détient les moyens propres à situer sa concentration intérieure sur les objets qui lui donne ses chances métaphysiques ou poétiques. Il y a une qualification de l’espace qui dans ses peintures donne à penser que l’objet "existant" est aussi appelé hors de son existence pour signifier et pour être. Nous sommes dans un univers où les choses se répondent hors de la logique de leur substance matérielle.

Nombreuses expositions en Belgique, Italie, Hollande, France, Allemagne et Maroc.

Artiste-peintre et fin lettré, Alexis KEUNEN n'en fit jamais étalage, tant son naturel et sa courtoisie, même incisive, prenaient le pas sur sa culture et son talent.
